Our twin town - Saint-Chéron

Saint-Chéron is in the Essonne department, some 300 road miles from Rotherfield and 45km southwest of Paris. Not far from the autoroute to Chartres, it lies in the Orge valley, between Dourdan and Arpajon. You can reach it by Eurostar to Paris Gare du Nord, Métro plus RER train (Réseau Express Régional) to Saint-Chéron. Trains to Saint-Chéron leave Paris every 30 minutes and the journey takes 50 minutes or so depending on at which Métro station you board the RER. Paris Orly is the nearest airport (26km), but Charles De Gaulle (60km) is also easily accessible by public transport.

About Saint-Chéron

Saint-Chéron is a small compact town in the attractive Orge valley surrounded by rolling wooded countryside.  There are several small châteaux nearby and more famous ones - Versailles and Fontainebleau and Vincennes - an hour away.  The population is a little more than Rotherfield's - about 4,500.  Some work locally in commerce and agriculture, others commute to Paris.  The Saint-Chéronnais are friendly and informal.

An old-style British telephone box features outside the Mairie.

The town is well provided with shops, cafés, bars and restaurants and has an open air market every Thursday.  There are two primary schools. Sports clubs include football, boules, judo, tennis, volleyball and gymnastics. Other activities include bridge, yoga, flower arranging, pottery, music, walkers and anciens combattants (veterans - equivalent to the British Legion).  There is a public swimming pool nearby.
