click on image to view with English translationRotherfield Parish Twinning Association (RPTA) was formed in 1986. Rotherfield, in East Sussex, is twinned with Saint-Chéron, department of the Essonne, about 45km south- west of Paris.

The original formal twinning agreement, both a French and an English version (not a literal translation), signed by the chairman and secretary of the Rotherfield Parish Council is currently framed and hung in the vestibule of Rotherfield Village Hall. To view images and transcriptions of these, click on image to the left (pdf file opens in a separate window).

Saint-Chéron has also been twinned with the small Italian town of Vicovaro near Rome since 2002.

The idea of town twinning was set up after World War 2, to promote friendship and understanding amongst the individuals of towns and villages in Europe. It is now a worldwide movement. There are no current plans for RPTA to link with anywhere other than Saint-Chéron, but our constitution includes provision for that possibility if the opportunity presents itself.

Commemorative medallionThe Association is run by a voluntary committee who are elected at the AGM. It receives no public subsidy and raises its own funds through social activities and membership fees. This year we were generously supported by the Rotherfield and Mark Cross Bonfire Society

In 2016 we celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Association. A specially mounted medallion of Saint Cheron was presented to is at a celebratory reception during our visit in May 2016 (see image to right).

Twinning Association members can visit France every year. Every second year the visit is to the twin town. In between, there is a joint exploring (walking)weekend somewhere else in France.

Visits to Rotherfield by the Saint-Chéronnais occur every two years with a joint exploring and walking weekend somewhere else in the UK in the intervening years.

We welcome new members, irrespective of residence location. If you are a lover of France, its food, culture and people or if you just want to get to know France better then please see our Membership page for more details.
